Phototherapy with monochromatic LED light is well established in the field of
dermatology and aesthetics and it is considered a standard care treatment of
several dermatological conditions.
The clinical efficacy of blue light has been confirmed in numerous clinical
investigations, especially in mild to moderate inflammatory acne.
Shorter wavelengths (blue color) penetrates primarily the most superficial parts
of the skin (epidermis), where most bacteria accumulate. A modulation of the
molecular pathways ensues when the skin is stimulated with blue light.
Most notably, the activation of porphyrins in Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes),
by blue light in the range 415 – 450nm can cause damage and ultimately kill
the bacteria by releasing singlet oxygen.
